Take That's Beautiful World

Friday, March 28th, 2008

IN THE SPRING OF 1990, MANCHESTER WAS A CITY IN THE GRIP OF A POP-CULTURAL REVOLUTION THAT WAS ATTRACTING THE ATTENTION OF THE WORLD’S MEDIA. IT WAS THE TIME OF THE STONE ROSES AND HAPPY MONDAYS. IT WAS THE TIME OF MUSIC, FASHION AND NIGHTCLUBS, NEW SOUNDS AND STYLES. IT WAS ALSO THE TIME WHEN TEEN-BAND TAKE THAT SAW ITS FIRST LIGHT, UNAWARE OF THE FACT THAT IN A FEW YEARS TIME THEY WOULD GROW TO BE ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL BRITISH BANDS EVER.

Gary Barlow - 19, Howard Donald - 21, Jason Orange – 19, Mark Owen – 16 and Robbie Williams – 16. Five working class boys, each with their own little music or media history, none of them with any stage experience. It took them 2 years filled with gigs in song and dance but by the end of 1992, they were generating hysteria in towns and cities across Britain, and beginning a four-year reign as the nation's pop-kings that, by the time they split in 1996, would see them become the biggest-selling UK act since the Beatles, selling over 25million records.

Take That’s musical history is well-known. In their four years of world fame they have been an example for many other boys bands. This all came to an abrupt end in 1996, when the band members decided to split up, after Robbie Williams already left the band one year before. Traumatic for the numerous fans, as well as for the five boys, who found themselves now pitching against each other while desperately trying to start their solo careers. Something that only Robbie has been extremely successful in, although Gary had a good start and was expected to take the lead.

After careful talks in 2004, Take That released a greatest hits and filmed documentary in 2005, in which also Robbie participated, though not in combination with his four ex-band members. The success of this project made the band decide to do a reunite tour in 2006 – again without Robbie – which, after a careful start, turned out to be a success as none before. Reason enough for the four remaining Take That-ers to return to the studios and start working on a come back album, which eventually was released earlier this year under the title 'Beautiful World.'

Their come back single 'Patience,' with Gary Barlow in the lead, was released as the first track from Beautiful World at the end of 2006 and entered the British charts at number 4. ‘Shine,’ with Mark Owen in the lead, was released in February of this year and entered the chart at number one, a third single 'I'd Wait For Life' is on it's way, and the anticipated European tour which was supposed to kick of in October 2007, had now transformed in  Beautiful World Tour. Take That is back, older, wiser and with a matured sound, and even Robbie Williams seems to acknowledge his former four friends’ huge success, and, according to his mother, seriously considers a return to the band for a one off performance. It is indeed a Beautiful World. –B-
